Ambassadors of the G8 Summit Visit Kyoto

Before this big event, a G8 Ambassador Gathering in Kyoto 2008 was held on April 11th. On that day, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Nakayama and the Mayor of Kyoto, Mr. Kadokawa, welcomed the ambassadors at Kyoto State Guest House. The ambassador of Germany made a speech and gave his impression of Kyoto. He said, “All the ministers will be impressed with Kyoto’s beautiful tradition and will be inspired by Kyoto’s future-oriented spirit.” Participants enjoyed talking to each other while enjoying Japanese tea and Kyoto cuisine.
They visited Heian Shrine and Nanzen-ji Temple and viewed the beauty of the cherry blossoms in full bloom. The G8 Summit is a big opportunity for Kyoto to show its beauty to the world. A 1,000 yen Fine will be Charged for Street Smoking from June 1st

Kyoto City will start to fine people 1,000 yen for smoking on streets where smoking is banned starting from June 1st. Last year, the city introduced an ordinance which bans street smoking. Banning street smoking can prevent health problems and accidents.
From June 1st, smoking is prohibited on 10 streets: Shijo (between Higashioji and Karasuma), Karawamachi and Oike (between Oike and Shijo), etc. If someone smokes on these streets, a city staff member can fine him/her 1,000 yen. G8 Summit 2008 Will be Held in Kyoto on June 26th and 27th

The G8 Summit will be held in Kyoto on June 26th and 27th. A ‘Welcome Walk’ was held on March 30th. On that day, about 500 people departed from Kyoto City Hall and walked to Takaragaike Park via the Kyoto State Guest House, and the Kyoto International Conference Center, the conference venue. They walked the 12-km course appealing for support for the G8 Summit.
The G8 Summit is a very important conference during which participants discuss peace and environmental issues to decide the direction of the world. Also it is a great chance for Kyoto to promote its beauty, culture and traditions to the world. Let’s welcome the guests with warm hospitality and make the conference a success.
