Revision of City Subway Fares

Kyoto City will revise city subway fares from January 7th 2006. The minimum ticket price will be increased by ¥10 to ¥210 and other interval fares will be increased by ¥20. The increases are meant to reduce the deficit after reducing extra expenses or personnel costs were determined not to be sufficient in the light of enormous construction costs. However, the cost of student commuter passes will not be increased. In addition a new ‘1-day Free Ticket’, offering unlimited one day use, will be issued for city subways (adults: ¥600, children: ¥300). Emergency Clinics for the New Year’s Holiday Opened

Kyoto City opened new emergency clinics for the New Year’s holiday from December 29th to January 4th at 6 locations: Nakagyo ward (for pediatric, eye, ear, nose, throat), Yamashina ward (internal medicine, pediatrics), Ukyo ward (internal medicine), Fushimi ward (dentistry), Nishikyo ward (dentistry), and the Oral Medical Center (dentistry) at JR Nijo Station. The clinics are open from 10:00 to 16:00 but some may be open longer. Please bring your insurance card with you.


Free Counseling Desk for Building Resistance for Earthquakes

Kyoto City has opened a free counseling desk for developing improved earthquake response and investigation. At present, a major scandal involving falsified earthquake data for structures has gained wide media attention in Japan. The desk accepts enquiries from citizens regarding this matter. A first-class architect is always present at the desk and other specialists can be arranged for. The desk is in the Sumai Taiken-kan in Higashi Kujo, Minami ward. It is open on Tue., Thurs., and Sat. (except for national holidays and the end and beginning of the year) from 10:00-17:00. Advice can be obtained by phone as well at 075-693-5131. Internet Library Book Reservation System Initiated

Kyoto City started an internet library book reservation service at the City Library on January 5th 2006. Users can reserve books without visiting the check out counter. A library card and individual password are required to use this service. The password is issued at each library. Bring your library card or if you don’t have one, bring ID, for example, driver license or insurance card. For further information, contact the Kyoto City Library at 075-802-3133.


Foundation Assembly of Global Climate Change Committee Held

12 December 2005

On December 12, 2005, the foundation assembly of the Global Climate Change Committee was held in Montreal, Canada. It is the network of cities and states from around the world where mayors and the chairmen of each region join to discuss global warming and related environmental matters. The promoter is Mr. Masumoto, the mayor of Kyoto City. To create the committee, he invited mayors from cities that have held international conference related to global climate change. In the assembly, Mr. Masumoto claimed that it is necessary for such cities to cooperate in a global sense to preserve the environment. Website of Kyoto City’s Safety Measures Opened

Kyoto City has opened a new page in its website which introduces about 340 safety measures. Users can find all kinds of useful information on this page. The website also includes links to other useful websites and introduces safety plans in each region in Kyoto. A cute animation character conducts a quiz on the site to promote safety understanding. Public Session about Household Garbage Disposal Charges Held

5 December 2005

Kyoto City has held a number of public sessions about the introduction of garbage disposal charges for household garbage. To promote the reduction in the amount of the garbage, segregation and recycling, the city has specified the use of special transparent or semi-transparent garbage bags. The introduction of these special garbage bags and their purchase by households will begin in October 2006 after a meeting of specialists has been held. The public sessions have already been held in some local areas, and in addition, a larger scale session was held on Thursday December 8th, from 19:00 at Fureai Bunka Kaikan in Ukyo ward, and Sunday December 11th, from 10:00 at Hito Machi Koryu-kan in Shimogyo ward. Special Clinic for Asbestos Related Illnesses Opened at Kyoto City Hospital

The serious health problems caused by asbestos have attracted attention recently all over Japan. The Kyoto City Hospital in Nakagyo ward opened a special clinic for asbestos related illnesses on December 1st 2005. The clinic deals with the mesothelimas and lung cancer caused by asbestos. The medical service is available on Thursdays from 14:00-16:00. Reservations are required for consultation.
