'Mushiko' windows (Mushiko-mado)

NO.54
Yane-kanban (Roof signs)
'Mushiko' windows look very good on the lacquer rash walls of the 'machiya' style house.
'Senbon-goushi' lattices, 'inu-yarai' facade elements and 'mushiko' windows bring about the refined taste of Kyoto style 'machiya' houses. Among them the simple and beautiful vertical lines of 'mushiko' windows look very good on the lacquer rash walls of the houses. Originally it is said to be a device of our predecessors to provide light and fire prevention to the 'machiya' houses, so the functional beauty of their design is wonderful. The name and shape of 'mushiko' windows derives from 'mushi-kago' (a box for insects) and even nowadays it evokes the atmosphere where one expects to hear the insects' voices at any moment.
