Senbon Torii

Senbon Torii
Over 20,000 vermilion torii, set against a green backdrop.
Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine is renowned for its foxes, fried tofu and particularly the many vermilion torii (shrine gates), which form a kind of endless maze leading up to the shrine. The Inari deity is celebrated throughout Japan as a god of business prosperity, and the torii were donated by people praying for good fortune. They are, in a sense, the physical manifestation of the hopes of ordinary people, with the strength of prayer reflected in the bright red colour. There arises the urge to pass through the vermilion tunnel, and emerge in a world where hopes and aspirations may come true.
