Giboshi on Sanjo Ohashi Bridge - reminiscent of 16th-century Kyoto.
As a jewel might cap the end of a sceptre, giboshi adorn the pillars on the railings of Sanjo Ohashi Bridge. Large and small, there are 12 in all. One giboshi was made this century to replace one lost during a 1935 flood. All the rest date from 1590, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi carried out reconstruction work on the bridge. A plate engraved with Chinese characters suggests this was a major project. The original foundation stones and other parts of the bridge have all been replaced in the centuries since then. Only the giboshi are original. Tinged a greenish-blue, giboshi speak of history to passersby.
